Honorable Mention
Time and Tide
DarkScribe (Ian Marlowe)

Because restrictions are placed
too often on the skin,
I shall not cut too deep

I will not bother with razors
or needles that rust and house
bacterial refugees

The object of this game
is relativity: how we move
through space and time

Formulas and derivatives
shed no light on our complexity,
on our anemic sequences

We are taught that one and one equals
two, like test monkeys we learn to press
buttons for the final, fateful launch

We never consider the aftermath:

How we will ever make it home,
that our skin will burn off the bones
at the point of re-entry

Instead we focus on the prize:

Nebulas dancing among cosmic gases,
Black Holes picking light from between their teeth,
how we'll come so far for Heaven
expecting to find someone home
